Literacy

For both teachers and students, the foundation of learning and teaching starts with literacy. As a student learns to read and works their way to more complex ideals, teachers must follow a similar path. The first step to teaching a classroom full of students is learning how to communicate efficiently. When speaking to a classroom a teacher must speak clearly and with correct grammar. Through this communication, students learn these important skills. If a teacher does not communicate with student effectively, there can be a disconnect between students and teachers that hinders learning.

LITERACY REPORT

In Fundamentals of Language and Literacy, we worked with students on long vowel correspondences. At the end of the semester, each of us were asked to compile information we gathered on our student and conduct a literacy report. This literacy report was an in-depth report of how our student did during our time working together. This included behavior, developmental phase, progress, as well as recommendations for the student's teacher and parents. This assignment was very useful for me as a future teacher because I learned how to evaluate each student in great detail which will help grow on their strengths and work on their weaknesses.

LESSON DESIGNS

During my Fundamentals of Language and Literacy class, I was able to create lesson designs to use for teaching different types of readers. We created these designs for emergent, beginner, growing independence and fluency, and reading to learn readers. This really helped me to understand ways to reach students in reading. I have a script of personal communication with students, which is very helpful in the classroom. These lessons are very detailed with step by step instructions. These lessons will be used for teaching vowel correspondences, comprehension strategies, vocabulary and more!
