Teaching & Learning

Teaching is the very thing all educators set out to do when they decide to be a teacher. With that being said just "teaching" is not enough. As educators, it is very important to sift through which methods of teaching are and are not effective. In elementary education, the ways in which you teach are so important. An effective teacher will teach in ways that motivate each and every student. An effective teacher will also work to make sure every assessment is equitable for students no matter their style of learning. We must allow students to express their knowledge in whichever way they can best. A teacher's classroom should be a place where learning is encouraged and students strive to do their best. If students are put in these situations, they are bound for a successful future.

LETTERBOX LESSON

In my Fundamentals of Language and Literacy class, I worked with a student once a week at Dean Road Elementary School. The purpose of working with this student was to use practices from the classroom to teach her unknown vowel correspondences. This oppertunity allowed me to see first-hand how effective the methods I learned in class really were. As we worked all semster, my student learned correspondence after correspondence. On of our last assignments for this class was to video one of our letterbox lessons, so that our professor could evaluate us as teachers.

Fossils Lesson Plan

In my Child Development, Learning, Motivation, and Assessment class, I worked in a group on a lesson plan on fossils. The biggest factor in determining if our lessons were successful, was rather or not the lesson could be useful for every student. This assignment helped me as a future educator how important it is that there are many ways a child is taught a lesson. We were required to put together a lecture powerpoint, an activity for short term and long term memory, a learner constructivist activity, and create assessments covering the material. This helped me to understandthe importance in each one of these types of learning.
